Shadow Worlds

"Shadow Worlds" is a filmic essay about shadows. The stories and ideas which are collected in Shadow Worlds range from ancient myths where the shadow was an autonomous entity to the shadow and parallel worlds of quantum physics. Shadow Worlds delves into the world of shadow by way of associative montage and makes a time travel beyond the present.

The relation between man and shadow has changed through the centuries and the various views on this dark subject can be taken as evidence for the ways in which living conditions and world views have been altered. Anecdotes and stories, taken from 3000 years of mythology, philosophy and the natural sciences show the change of world views and human perception. Shadow Worlds is a cinematic search for astonishing images which are assembled to a journey in the mind of the viewer, ranging from ancient Egypt to modern cities and the fascinating quantum world. Inner and outer spaces are projection spaces for shadow pictures. The dramatic arc of this journey through different eras and cultures is a cinematic search for traces which reveals the separation between religion and science to be fictitious. Shadow Worlds is tied in to the successful short film "Obscure Lights" in which the development of artificial light was reflected in praise and doubt through the approach towards a fictitious city centre. Obscure Lights was shown at many national and international festivals, won several prices and was granted the Seal of Approval „Recommended" by the German Film Review Board.
